MSC Gulsun

MSC Gulsun shipMSC Gulsun is one of the world’s largest container ships operating nowadays. She was built by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea and at the time of her launch in 2019, she was even the world’s largest container ship, but later lost the competition with the building of bigger and bigger carriers.

MSC Gulsun is has a deadweight of 228,149 DWT and a gross tonnage of 232,618 GT. Her overall length is 399.90 m, moulded beam is 61.50 m and boards depth is 33.20 m. The maximum draft of the container ship is 16.50 m. With such measurements, MSC Gulsun has the capacity to carry 23,756 TEU, stowed at 24 rows across. The ship has 2,000 refrigerated slots for carrying temperature-controlled containers. The cargo system of the vessel is designed by MacGregor International AB. The vessel will operate services between Asia and Europe to lower the carbon footprint of their supply chains.

MSC GulsunThe vessel has an innovative design, including a bulbous bow, optimized rudder-bulb, minimized ship-side wind resistance, and exhaust gas economizer for auxiliary engines, which will provide lowering of the carbon emissions to 7.49 grams of CO2 emissions to move one tonne of cargo one nautical mile.

The main engine of the giant container ship MSC Gulsun is MAN Diesel & Turbo 11G95ME-C with an ultra-long stroke. This optimized engine design enhances efficient propulsion, reduces fuel consumption, and lower CO2. The main engine has a power of 66,650 kW x 80.0 rpm. The ship’s maximum speed is 21 knots.

Samsung Heavy said that the vessel is structurally designed so that it can easily adapt to become a liquefied natural gas (LNG) ship in the future.
