MSC Oscar

MSC OscarMSC Oscar is one of the largest container carriers in the world with a capacity for 19,224 TEU. The ship was built in 2015 by South Korean Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME). MSC Oscar has an overall length of 395.40 m, moulded beam of 59.00 m and a maximum draft of 16.00 m. The container carrier has a deadweight of 197,362 DWT and gross tonnage of 192,237 GRT. MSC Oscar has a maximum capacity for 19,224 TEU, but only if each has a mean weight not exceeding 10.2 tonnes. With an average of 14-tonne containers, the capacity is around 14,000 TEU. The carrier has 1,800 reefer plugs for transportation of temperature controller containers for foods and other goods. MSC Oscar is one of the most modern and reliable container ships, implementing the latest marine engineering developments and complying with the IMO standards. To reduce weight and cost, the steel hull is astonishingly thin in places. An intricate lattice of joints between its inner and outer walls provide the structural rigidity required to support such loads safely.

MSC Oscar has reliable and highly efficient engineering with main power unit two-stroke diesel engine MAN B&W 11S90ME-C, which has a total output power of 83,800 hp. The power is transmitted to the five-blade propeller, allowing the carrier to operating with a service speed of 22.8 kts. The main engine has been optimized so that fuel consumption can be automatically controlled to take into consideration both speed and weather conditions and it has a broad optimal speed range for optimum operational flexibility. The efficiency of the engine is further enhanced with ABB turbochargers, which optimize operations of the power unit and also reduce consumption. The economy speed of MSC Oscar is actually 22.8 kts. In 24 hours it can travel 1,000 km, consuming 280,000 liters of fuel. This works out at less than 1.5 liters per container per 100 km.

MSC Oscar takes her name from the son of Diego Aponte, the president, and chief executive of owner Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). The vessel is operating under IMO number 9703291, MMSI 355906000 and call sign 3FBT7.
